Getting Glutened Sucks

I’ve been gluten-free for about 14 months, but about every eight weeks or so, I get accidentally glutened and it’s pretty sucky. I don’t know exactly how it impacts my digestion, especially not since going to Doc (I don’t get totally plugged like I used to), but I still get the rash and it’s pretty painful. I thought for a while it was dermatitis herpetiformis, which is the rash that’s associated with celiac disease, but I’m not absolutely certain that it’s not hives of some sort (and don’t see the point in having a doctor biopsy me, only to tell me to stay away from gluten).

Here’s how it goes. It always happens accidentally, I never intentionally think, “I know I shouldn’t have this but this one little taste would be so cool…” because I know what will happen — the rash — and it’s so not cool, it’s actually searing and sore. So, I eat something like, say, a burger, without knowing that someone’s added bread crumbs to it because it’s at a restaurant that I’ve been to before and I’ve had the burgers before and been fine but kitchen staffs change and along with them, preferences for how to make things. So, I end up with a bit of bread crumbs or whatnot in me, accidentally.

Usually, my mouth gets a little blistery right away, my lips may tingle, sometimes my eyes will feel scratchy. Never too bad on those fronts, but enough that I know what’s happening. Almost more like an allergic reaction than anything else (yes, it could be a wheat allergy but again, same thing, the solution is to avoid gluten). Then, I have no idea what it does internally, but as soon as I go to the bathroom, the rash starts.

Prior to Doc, the rash typically lasted about 10-12 days. Since Doc, I’ve gotten glutened twice — once about six weeks into seeing Doc and that lasted about nine days. And, just last week, absolutely no idea where that one came from (I’m guessing from some restaurant food that I got one evening, from a dish that’s usually pretty safe for me). It’s now eight days and it should be better by tomorrow, and may have been better a couple of days ago if I hadn’t overdone some activities in the heat and irritated the rash even more. And this time, I only had a bit of joint pain and only for one day, which was definitely better than in the past.

I’m curious as to whether or not the time the rash lasts really is getting shorter and what that means (that I’m healing a bit? Maybe. That the gluten and everything else with it is moving out of my system a bit quicker than it used to? Possibly. It could be all of these, or none of them).

Other than that, still doing great.

  2. I have a gluten intolerance too. Use the website http://www.findmeglutenfreee.com . Also, when you eat out ask tons of questions. It sucks being glutened. Now, I tend to stick to places I know are trained in dealing with gluten allergies and know what foods are safe when I’m unsure (veggies, potatos although not fries, salads if you make sure no crutons and ask about the salad dressing), and I rely on that website above 🙂 I hope this helps. It gets easier overtime.
