An A-to-Z Look at My First Year of Applied Kinesiology Adventures

Since my last post, I’ve passed a lot of milestones:

  • Over a year without booze: Last drink, January 30, 2017. (Full disclosure: Since that day, I’ve tried a sip of four different wines. Less than a thimbleful each time. Enough to taste; not enough to get tipsy. Will I ever drink again? Sure. Just not certain when and not in any hurry.)
  • First visit to Doc: February 8, 2017. (I’m guessing I’ve had about 20 since.)
  • Last caffeinated coffee: February 12, 2017. (I can have a decaf now and then, though not daily and not without food in my stomach.)
  • 21st anniversary of the car accident that knocked my alopecia into play: February 14, 2018 (that’s today!). It’s also about ten months since I last cared about it (the accident), which is kind of major, if you know how much importance I gave it for two decades (and if you don’t know how much, trust that I gave it a lot).

And today, on this anniversary, I also had an appointment with Doc. I’m just over a year in, so here’s an A-to-Z look at how things are going:

A: Adrenals, amygdyla, autoimmune issues and, of course, alopecia areata/ophiasis/totalis/universalis. I’ve had my troubles with you all–but still, I embrace you and I hope we find a workable peace this year.

B: Barre3. Started in November and three-and-a-half months in, I love it more than ever.

C: Cocaine. Just kidding!! Calm.

D: Dairy. I learned that too much of it makes my inner-ears itchy.

E: Elimination diet. Never did I think I’d still be booze and caffeine free, nor would I have thunk that I’d be 95% sugar free. But here I am, and happy for all.

F: Forest therapy, aka, Shinrin-Yoku, aka, total game-changer in my world. Broke open a cement wall around my heart. Thank you, thank you, to our lovely leader, and to the trees, and to the stone that let me leave a trouble in it. I no longer remember what that particular trouble was, so it must have worked.

G: Greens. Baby greens, mixed baby greens, greens with blue-green greens, grass-fed greens. A lot of greens.

H: Happy. That’s me. 98% of the time. It’s much easier when you feel really, really good and I highly recommend both.

I: I. I. I. This blog is all about me. So, how are you?

J: Junk food. We broke up about a year ago and I’ve (mostly) managed to stay away, except for a few booty calls.

K: Kinesiology, as in applied kinesiology (I already used too many ‘A’s, so this is filed under ‘K’), which is what this whole self-experiment with Doc is.

L: Lucky. A year ago, I was going downhill quickly physically, emotionally, spiritually, even financially. Today, everything is better. Perfect? Of course not. But a lot better.

M: Meditation. My 10-Minute Daily Challenge is meditation and it’s going so well that at today’s appointment with Doc, he encouraged me to up it to 20 minutes a day. But, that would blow the whole point of the 10-Minute Challenge, so 20 minutes daily will have to wait until March. Seriously. Sorry, Doc. Also, melia and morinda, two herbal supplements that Doc put me on early on, for just a few weeks, to help get rid of candida overgrowth, which I’m pretty darn certain is no longer a problem.

N: Naps. Still welcome them, rarely need them.

O: Open. This one’s hard to describe but I’ve noticed it the last several weeks: This ridiculously open, almost flowy and airy and light feeling in the middle of my chest, all the time. It sounds ridiculous and feels strange. But lovely.

P: Poop! If you’ve followed this blog at all, you had to know this was coming. And it does, daily. Yea!!!!!

Q: Questions. Doc asks a lot of them. Sometimes I hate them. But I never really hate him for asking them.

R: Rashes. I almost never get them anymore. Only about four times this year, and they get milder each time. Hallelujah!

S: Sugar. I know I’ve made progress because I can type the word without concurrently hurling myself through the wall and into the kitchen to get some. My addiction was so bad that I made it seem normal, like breathing. Except that most people don’t plot out their breathing in the same way that I would plot out how to get my hands on sugar.

T: Talking. Like, to Doc. As in, about my feelings. Still makes me cringe but I’ve come to realize that the more I dread it, the more I likely need it. Like today, when we had a hard session and I left with a headache and agita. I inevitably make reams of progress in the days and weeks and months to follow.

U: Undone. That’s how I feel after I leave an appointment with Doc in which he makes me talk about me. I spent more than half-a-century avoiding that. Why now? Why with him? Dunno. But here I am.

V: Vials. If you’ve ever tried applied kinesiology and your doctor or practitioner uses vials, you’ll understand. If you haven’t, I recommend reading this post by a really funny writer who nails a good description of it.

W: Water. Who knew? In the pre-Doc days, I could go decades without wanting a glass. Now, I’m a walking, talking aquarium filled with greens and neon gravel.

X: Xtra-credit here, for using my body as an experiment for the greater good.

Y: Yawn. Just thinking you’re likely getting sleepy if you’ve made it this far (and thank you, if you have).

Z: Zypan and zinc, two supplements that I’ve been on, one long-term (Zypan), one short-term (zinc). Both have seemed to help.
