Week 14: Halfway through the Healthy Challenge, am I Halfway to My Goals?

Posted by

Hi friends! As I mentioned in this update, which was the first in five weeks, that morning was a bummer with my weight way up and exercise way down. It was also the midway point — the start of Week 14 — of my Healthy Challenge.

Now, at the end of the week, how am I doing?

Suffice it to say that while my weight’s down a bit this week, it’s still a rather pathetic total overall for 14 weeks of (mostly) trying. Nevertheless, it’s down. I’m still eating too many calories and simply need to stop the sneak-snacking — if I can nail that (like I did for a while when I was “flex-Frenching,”) I’ll do much better.

I’m back on the exercise wagon and aiming to get six hip-hop-based workouts in this week. That’s right! I haven’t taken measurements or started trail running or even thought about any other goals, yet.

Alas, I’m not ready to toss in the towel, so be prepared for the ride, friends!

April 27: I was dreading this afternoon’s promised new workout (per my last post, Beachbody took down my favorite old Turbo Jam videos and I’ve been sulking about it for three weeks, but I have to move on).

I was going to do Turbo Fire, which I’ve done in the past and never really liked, but found I some way old Shaun T hip-hop videos on the Beachbody site and decided to do one of those instead, because I’ve secretly always dreamed of being able to dance even though I have the rhythm of a sofa cushion. Besides, I like Shaun T (although I won’t dare to try his really tough stuff yet).

How’d it go? I got through it (the one I did today is brief, about 20 minutes, and I think was part of some family/kids video series on Beachbody and was slowed-down lessons on various moves).

That said, it didn’t even register on my Fitbit as a workout.

So, to keep things fun (Shaun T) but hopefully a little more cardio’d, maybe tomorrow I’ll add a few minutes of HIIT stuff, too, like jumping jacks.

April 28: I couldn’t remember which video I tried yesterday, so I decided that I’d try the Shaun T CIZE series on Beachbody. These, too, use dance moves as cardio workouts. (A quick note: If you check out the program, just a warning that at least with the first video in the series, there’s not much of a warmup or cooldown, nor are there modifications given for some of the steps. That said, respect your fitness and comfort levels and modify, as needed, for your own safety and fun).

The one I tried today was Crazy 8s, which is the first in the series, I think. It was just over 30 minutes and even though I think this is the super-intro beginner video, I was sweating my eyeballs out and considered wrapping it up at 20 minutes in (okay, as early on as 10 minutes in, but I didn’t, I stuck it out and was so glad I did). And that was at half effort, too! (Not that I don’t want to do full effort, I just need to learn the moves first).

That said, maybe the universe was right when it conspired against me and my beloved old Turbo Jam videos. Maybe I needed to try something different. It was really fun, I’ll definitely try again tomorrow, and this time, it registered on my Fitbit as a workout and burned 306 calories in just over 30 minutes! Yea! (In the evening, I looked up the review on Dysfunctional Parrot and he, too, got his butt kicked, and he’s way further along in fitness than I am, and younger, too. Here’s the review, FYI.)

April 29: Seriously, folks, CIZE may just be the most fun workout ever. Granted, I’m only two days in and I’ll be on the intro/easier video for a while, but I’d give myself an A++ for improvement today over yesterday and I’m already looking forward to doing it again tomorrow. Totally out of breath, totally sweating and truly enjoying it.

Tracking eats through MyFitnessPal again and aiming to stay the course, just 14 weeks left in my Healthy Challenge and I’ve got a long way to go to meet my goals!

May 1: Because I knew yesterday would be really hectic, I decided that it would be my day off from working out this week. That said, I got right back on the Shaun T/CIZE party train this morning. Fun stuff, truly. I’ll go with this first video through Saturday and on Sunday, I’ll move on to the next.

Weight’s stayed the same for two days but I think with a really good day today, it will budge tomorrow (fingers crossed).

May 2: I didn’t weigh in today, simply forgot. But, I did get my CIZE workout in, getting a little better each day. I swear, even if I didn’t lose any weight yet, I think my upper arms are a tiny bit more toned already from the workouts, too. We can all dream.

May 3: Oy, up .2lbs from the middle of the week! Is it sneak-snacks? Is it water weight? Is it simply the weight (heaviness) of some of the foods I’d eaten yesterday? I don’t know, but that was a surprise and a bummer.

Oh, well, the scale won’t always head down and I’ll just have to try harder. I know that snacking is my downfall, so I really need to nix that.

Have a great week, all, see you next Friday!
